6 HEALTHY HABITS FOR THE NEW YEAR

2.03.2019

There's a whole load of nonsense, (to put it lightly), on the Internet about starting and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. No matter what your health and fitness goals are, you should use these tips to guide you! I've linked a few of my favourite health and fitness influencers below as I think that they are a fantastic, positive influence and also, really lovely people! Here are six healthy habits to adopt in 2019.

1. DON'T SKIP BREAKFAST

I know what some of you are thinking - 'Breakfast isn't the most important meal of the day - that's been debunked!'. Yes, it has, but the fact that it's not the 'most important' meal of the day does not excuse all of its benefits. A nutritious breakfast will decrease cravings, provide you with slow-release energy, keep you fueled until lunchtime etc. I wouldn't necessarily recommend intermittent fasting, but just eating intuitively (when you feel hungry). Whenever you're ready for breakfast, eat it. And by all means, if you're not hungry for breakfast and it's like 4pm, just eat a meal and make sure you make up for it later!

2. NO MORE FADS, PLEASE!

No food after 6pm, carbs are evil, fad diets, detox teas - the list goes on. This is nonsense, and you need to drop it now! Just EAT for goodness sake! No, cauliflower rice is not rice and eating a bagel at 6pm and is no different from eating one at 7pm.

3. BABY STEPS

Baby steps! I feel like this is so important to say. 'Fast' and 'healthy lifestyle' don't go together. Nothing happens really quickly! Making a few healthy swaps to your diet can greatly improve your health and how you feel.

4. IT TAKES TIME, OK

Gaining muscle takes time, losing fat takes time, finding the right style of eating takes time - I think you're getting the gist. Be patient! You want long term results, not to quickly 'achieve' a goal and then lose it with a month or two.

5. WALK MORE

Walking has been proven to increase cardiovascular and pulmonary (heart and lung) fitness, reduce the risk of stroke and heart disease, strengthen bones and relieve stress. It's so easy to get your steps in, whether you choose to walk to school or work or go for a thirty-minute stroll a few nights each week, it all adds up!

6. DRINK MORE WATER

We all need to drink more water. I know it's very cliche - but it's true! I've established that I'm pretty terrible at this - but drinking more water is just something we have to do. Water is known to be the best and most naturally hydrating liquid, promotes cardiovascular health, keeps muscles and joints working and helps cleanse toxins from your body - so it's pretty damn important.
